Artist Residency at Alys Beach // recent work examples & proposal
My recent work explores notions of desire, consumption, fulfillment, and loss through photography, video, and animation. Within the Happy Crowd is an ongoing series in which I digitally extract individuals from photographs taken within crowded, enjoyable environments, such as amusement parks or carnivals. Y’all Look Hungry is a multimedia installation that explores consumer culture through high-definition televisions and animations that simultaneously promote and critique product advertisements. I continued this exploration of advertisement with You Deserve More, a two-channel synchronized digital animation that displays simple, competing messages, commissioned for the Computer Aided exhibition at the Masur Museum of Art in Monroe, LA. More examples of my recent work may be found here.

In the age of high-definition imagery and state-of-the art advertising, I have become interested in the outmoded advertisements I find in places like Mansfield, Ohio, where I currently reside. For Digital Graffiti 2013, I exhibited Ohio Skyscape, an animation in which a cheap, inelegant, inflatable gorilla advertisment penetrates a beautiful sky and begs for attention

For the Alys Beach artist residency, I would like to create an immersive experience for viewers by using site-specific projections. Although it may evolve through the process of working, my general idea is to construct multiple (at least three), looping animations to be projected on separate buildings. These animations will feature colorful, dancing inflatable advertisements like the one pictured in the short sketch clip below. The inflatable advertisements will look nearly identical, but will individually vie for the viewer’s gaze with an unrelenting, redundant dance promising happiness and fulfillment. The figures will likely be surrounded by a consumable, idealistic sky recorded at Alys Beach during the residency, and will be scaled to interact formally within the boundaries of the particular structures that are used. The residency at Alys Beach will allow a unique opportunity to continue my exploration of consumer society and advertisement through multiple large-scale, colorful projections within the environment.
