KATE SHANNON // K SPACE PROPOSAL SUBMISSION
Statement / Proposal
An interest in the photographic image is central to my studio practice. I begin my visual projects by creating or appropriating digital photographs. I then spend time at a computer screen meticulously eliminating, rearranging, or animating the tiny pixels that form these images. In this way, the photograph itself is not an end result but a foundation for further research, discovery, and invention. Conceptually, my digitally manipulated photographs explore notions such as desire, consumption, happiness, and loss.
Within the Happy Crowd is an ongoing series of images I create in environments where crowds gather to experience a series of happy moments, such as amusement parks or funfairs. By digitally removing the background elements from the original photographs, I visually isolate adults, teenagers, and children in transition between these moments. Although they gaze toward a prize to win, a thrill to experience, or a concession stand to visit, these individuals are stripped of their spectacular surroundings and become solitary subjects to contemplate.
I am interested in what people look like when they are inside places that have been constructed around the idea of selling enjoyment. Such places are exaggerated reflections of a larger consumer culture that functions by creating and capitalizing on desire. Like the people in my photographs, I exchange fees for admission to environments overflowing with pleasurable items and experiences. My relationship to the individuals who surround me, one captured by the camera and cultivated through the image, is the essence of the Within the Happy Crowd series.
I have expanded my exploration of consumerism with works such as You Deserve More, a multimedia installation that surrounds viewers with high-definition screens, animated photographs, and phrases appropriated from well-known advertisements. By employing advertising strategies and agencies in the installation, I draw attention to the manner in which images and words are used to create desire in the contemporary consumer. In a series of animations titled Ohio Skyscapes, I turn my attention to the outmoded, desperate advertisements I often encounter in the economically depressed city of Mansfield, Ohio, where I currently work.
I would like to propose an exhibition at KSpace that will include selections from these works as well as new work with the same conceptual framework. My work can be edited to fill a space of any size. I am most interested in exhibiting in the Corner Gallery, as the enclosed space will allow an unique opportunity to build an immersive experience for viewers. I am not interested in exhibiting in the Gift Shop or the Hot Spot at this time. The Within the Happy Crowd images are printed 15” x 22” on Epson Premium Luster Paper and displayed in simple, white frames. My animations are displayed on HDTVs and projected. I can provide all electronic equipment and travel to install my work.
I am currently an assistant professor within the Department of Art at The Ohio State University. I have exhibited my work nationally at venues such as the College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas, NV; Marshall University in Huntington, WV; the Masur Museum of Art in Monroe, LA; Manifest Gallery in Cincinnati, OH; the Zhou B Art Center Gallery in Chicago, IL; and TRACTIONARTS in Los Angeles, CA. I received my master of fine arts degree from The Ohio State University and my bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of Kentucky.
